Mobitel 3.5G

Mobitel too introduced their Thrid Generation network last week. They announced an improvement over Dialog 3G's services as Mobitel has 3.5G, a newer version.

Mobitel M3 boasts 7.2 Mbps downlink speed and 1.9 Mbps uplink speed, which is a large improvement over the ordinary 3G. However, only 512 Kbps downlink and 128 Kbps uplink is available for mobile users. The higher speeds are available under monthly subscription for home and office users, not for mobile users. The subscription packages range from LKR 400 (512k) to LK 15000 (7.2M).

Free Data Bundles on 3G Home Usage
But unfortunately all the subscription packages have download limits. SLT once more cheats the customers, by calling these limits "Free Data Bundles". Once you pass the limit, you have to pay LKR 10 for every 10 MB downloaded.

I personally believe it is better to get Dialog WiMAX 4M for LKR 14000 and download without limit, than use Mobitel Broadband for LK 15000 and pay even more for "excess" downloading. Its simply not worth for users like me, who download a lot of data every month. I should get around to measuring my downlink usage.

For Mobile Users
M3 is slightly faster than Dialog 3G, and equal to SLT Home ADSL at 512K. Dialog 3G is at 384K, although it has been faster at times. M3 has a session charge of LKR 2 whilst Dialog had removed it some time ago. The prices are equal between the two at LKR 0.02 per kilobyte.

Oh, I almost forgot! There is a "Free Data Bundle" of 200 MB for mobile users too. Customers say that this provides 200 MB of free downloads to all customers. After passing 200 MB the normal data charge will be applied. That's nice of Mobitel. But then why give the same name "Free Data Bundle" for the "download limit" on 3G home usage?

Video Calling
M3 provides Video Calling T LKR 3 per minute and higher to M3 customers, according to the package. It was also said in the M3 launch speech that "this is probably the lowest price you will ever get". LKR 3 is definitely cheaper than Dialog 3G Video Calls (LKR 5 per minute), but whether it will remain so is yet to be seen.

Mobi TV
Now is the the Mobi TV service available in the Americas or Mobitel's own service under the same name. Most likely it is the latter (copyright issues?). This is the competition to Dialog Mobile TV. The picture quality on M3 could be improved because of the slightly faster downlink speed. Other than that, I do not have any information on the channels available.

We are the First in South Asia (NOT)
Mobitel has been proudly proclaiming that they are the first in Asia to provide 3.5G and HSPA (High Speed Data Access) in South Asia. There is a flaw in this advertising. Mobitel is the first to provide 3.5G, but not HSPA. Dialog was actually the first to provide HSPA in South Asia.

This is only a summary of the information that Mobitel has provided, but as with all advertising there are and will be misleading details. Please tell me about your experience with M3 if you have used the service, and about the Mobi TV service. And also some understanding about the "Free Data Bundle" business will be happily accepted.

For the moment I think I will stick on with Dialog because they have not set download limits, etc. And their service has not created much problems for me so far. I do not always trust SLT and their services, especially with the great fake price reducation they issued on landphones (benefits were only for businesses; we paid the same old amount).

Anyway, we must be happy that Dialog and Mobitel are the first to introduce 3G Networks in South Asia. A great milestone for both companies and for Sri Lanka.

UPDATE: Thanks to K FLYER and Tao 365 for further information.

Hi! I'm a M3 user, pretty fast, but I don't understand what you had said about a 200MB data bundle. According to my knowledge, the 200MB thing is a part of their loyalty programme. Which gives you free browsing for a certain limit if you surf over 200MB. However, I've not yet used their Mobile TV service. Though the branding differs from 3G to 3.5G. According to Dialog's website, they utilize a HSPA platform too. This is the point where I don't understand as Mobitel advertises themselves as the first HSPA operator in South Asia. But when I contacted Dialog Help desk recently, they told me that their maximum speed is only 384K. But since the launch of their 3G service, their website shows the speed as 1.5Mbps. And there was one mistake on your post. Charges actually differ between Dialog and Mobitel. As Dialog did cut off the GPRS session charge long ago and Mobitel still charges this. It'd be much appreciated if you could please contact me by email or put me a line at my blog, www.mobileroyale.tk or lankamobile.blogspot.com .

This would have been great if not for the stupid download limits as you mentioned. Charging 1/- extra for every 1 MB over the limit is just a rip off. Anyway I would have switched immediately from Dialog WiMax if they had a sensible pricing structure. I just hope they make it affordable in the near future since this would mean I have broadband internet in most places I carry my laptop. Also the coverage seems to be pretty good according to the map in mobitel site , even at the initial stages.

Hi Technoguy, It's really a pleasure to help, but there are two more updates that needs to be done.
1. Mobitel doesn't provide video calls at Rs.3. May be this is so on postpaid, but as most of the users are prepaid, your detail will be confusing. So please recorrect it. The charges on SMART (Oh, this is another copyright issue. But that's another topic) prepaid are: M2M-2LKR per min, Other ntwks-5LKR per min.
2. HSPA is 3.5G, furthermore, it's only a part of branding and the original name of the technology is HSPA, hence Mobitel wasn't the first in SOUTH Asia (You had wrote as Asia, but there are many 3.5G operators in Asia)to deploy 3.5G either. And, Dialog still being silent on this is a question (let's say that's the way decent companies work), however we must be proud that both the first and second mobile networks in South Asia to deploy 3G are from Sri Lanka.

Hey don't say rubish things...Mobitel is the one & only 3.5G HSPA(7.2HSDPA & 1.9HSUPA) network in south asia.Dialog have a 3G UMTS network only support upto downloadlink 2Mbps speed..In some site's of Dialog told that it have a HSDPA network but it is a flaw, not true,.So dialog should be decent.
Hey I have enjoyed Mobitel M3 speed, I were surfed 52kB/s (416kbps) speed on my N73 phone (used as a modem), at the same time we accessed Dialog 3G in another computer (used another N73) the speed is only maximum 20kB/s (160kbps)..What a different..
Hey you guys said that about the threshold 200MB, it is not 200MB, it is 20MB.If we surfed 20MB,they offer a free bundle of 200MB..Wow..
And on postpaid 400 broadband pkg offer 250MB and there after 1 rupee for 1MB.(but in dialog it is 5/= per MB).
Hey Mobitel is the #1 in call quality,GPRS speed, Reduced call charges & Technology.Only 2nd to Dialog on Subscriber base.
Hey why are u guys stuck on Dialog without a reason do you know Mobitel mms cost 5/- to other networks ,2/- to within network and no charges for incoming mms, Mobitel offer free email2sms to mobile but dialog offer it for 1/- per msg.. And all mobitel pakages offer totally incoming free facility customers, but Dialog which is not..
Hey do u guys know this now on Double M 1000pkg offer "100MB free data bundle, 200 minites outgoing calls 100sms, 25mms and a sub line (another 100 minites,100sms, 25 mms free within the subline) all these availlable for just 1000/- per month.."
Beter to have a brain wash now haa..
I am also a old dialog customer but changed to Mobitel after 2006..So I know what is the best network.

@ Krishan
Thanks for your information. I am researching in to the UMTS/HSPA thing.

Could you kindly point out where the 3G Broadband details are given in the Dialog website. I can find info about the data devices, but not the tariffs. Especially the LKR 5 per 1MB thing.

Thanks again.

Guys, I'm sorry. My knowledge on data rates is very low. I didn't know that kbit/sec and kbps were different (though I presumed they were different, I couldn't find anywhere what was the comparison). The speed that I got on my phone was 83-96kbit/sec. Does that mean 700+kbps??? Yes you are correct KRISHAN, Mobitel has the fastest GPRS speeds and lowest call rates, but not the finest technology. Their cell capacity is not enough to cope with congestion at night, hence alerting NETWORK BUSY for almost every call and disabling your incoming facility automatically. The worst thing is that, in everything they do, they try to earn money faster, but not reliably. So in everything, they try to make a catch, not loyal to customers and sometimes, finally, "Natapu thowilekuth ne, bere paluwakuth ne". That's where they are different from Dialog. But, overall, Mobitel is a good network.

same problem at your area, have on dialog in our area (Kurunegala town) take a long time to make calls to a dialog phones..My brother he is a dialog customer he is "Kapuwath Dialog" my mum trying and trying to make him calls at night and now she hate that thing...She always tell him "oka wisikerranawako :-)"
She tell me that she can access my phone on first dial..
Few months ago there was a news released saying about another psunami; all mobile network got busy but not the mobitel..
Hey do u know when I sending mmses to dialog phones, some times they doesn't recieave the message but they loose their money...
Hey do you know dialog EDGE network have only speed 64kb/s but Mobitel max speed of EDGE is 384kb/s.
That's why only Mobitel issue EDGE pakages which dialog is not.
Because of free email2sms service of mobitel,I was set the Yahoo mail & weather alerts to my phone, but can't do that it with a dialog phone :-)
Mobitel upgrading there network in every 3 months to increase the band width and to improve the call quality which dialog is not.Any way dialog is a good network compare to Tigo & Hutch..
Onece u choose Mobitel you won't change to another for a long time..But I am not a "Kapuwath Mobitel custormer"
when another network give more facilities and reduced call & Data charges,I select that network...We'll see what happening after ariving of Airtel .,powered with 2.5G and 3G..
Thank u!

Correction please;
please visit hspa.gsmworld.com site is 100% sure,.Its one of my favorite site.
So I directly contact Mobitel PVT LTD via a email..And and asked about the flaw about HSPA;1st in Southasia, Dialog or Mobitel..They told Dialog was the First in 3.5G HSPA in south asia..But MOBITEL is the first of super 3.5G HSPA in south asia..
Do u know they always advertise as South asia's 1st and only super 3.5G HSPA network with 7.2kbps dwld and 1.8 kbps uplink.
They mentioned that "Super 3.5G HSPA", only have the speed of 7.2 dwldlink, which is the max dowld speed get through the HSPA networks pactically..And Mobitel is the world 7th in super 3.5G provider..They mentioned that only the world few VIP networks issueing this ultimate speed,.Ha problem solved ne :-)
Tigo is going to launch 3.5G HSPA 1.8Mbps uplink (as dialog) in a breif time and they hv planning to issue it in the on set of next year..Soo "Mobitel is the one & only Super 3.5G HSPA 7.2dwlink & 1.8 uplink speed network in South asia." :-)

Dialog broadband does not provide unlimited downloading. If you look at their 'fair usage policy', you will find that the limits put there will cause great problems unless you are sure that you will not exceed the limits.

In my point of view, than degrading the service, charging for excess downloading is healthy for customers.

At last point, I switched to Mobitel due to this 'unfair usage policy'.
